When my husband and I married, I knew that we would be living nearly 1500 miles away from my family, but I was naive to think it would be easy to keep in touch. Over a decade of marriage later, I have missed out on truly important moments in the life of my family because of lack of time and limited funds for travel. The person I miss the most is my mom.
There are times I have done better than others at trying to keep our relationship strong and lines of communication open. There are many ways in which I have failed and even more ways I hope to improve. I hope that some of my suggestions below help you if you are in a similar situation as me.
1. Pray for your Mom
Know what concerns your mom. Ask her what her prayer requests and praises are. Listen and be interested. Pray for you mother daily. Follow up with her to find out how those situations worked out for which she asked you to pray.

2. Call your Mom
Life gets so busy. I can go a week and realize I forgot to call my mom. Make time to call your mom and ask about her life and don’t just talk about your own.
3. Visit your Mom Whenever Possible
I live about 23 hours away from my mother. It is really hard to find the time and mostly the funds to visit. We make it a priority to see her 1-2 times per year. I do hope that will become more frequent as our children get older. Pray about how you can visit your mother more often and more consistently to stay a part of her life and to allow her to be a part of your life.
4. Send Encouraging Notes
This is something that I would like to do more. There is something very special about receiving a note in the mail that is different than a phone call. Writing a note takes time and there is a sentimental air to it because you can save it. It is like a piece of that person. Consider writing a note to your mother every once in a while to share with her how she has inspired you and to encourage her when you know she needs it.
5. Send Thoughtful Gifts
Get to know your mother, her likes and dislikes, the same way that she knows yours. Find her special gifts to drop in the mail every now and then for a special treat. This will show her that you listen and that you care about her.
By taking the time to show your mother that you sincerely care about who she is and what she has done for you, you can build a stronger relationship with your mother than you ever had before. Even if you have your differences, praying for your mother will soften your heart towards her. By listening to her and going the extra mile, God may even soften her heart towards you. Mothers are so important and special. Consider adding one of these daily habits or monthly traditions above to your routine as you seek to love your mother from a distance.
Come back and let us know in the comments below if it was beneficial and how your mother responded!
